How do I get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity through Reddit
You get cited through Reddit by answering useful threads those engines already retrieve. Perplexity often cites Reddit; ChatGPT Search may surface it.

You get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity through Reddit when a useful thread those engines already retrieve contains a fact they can lift — not when you spam a landing page into a community that did not ask. Reddit is third-party corroboration. Perplexity often attaches numbered Reddit sources on “what do people actually use” questions. ChatGPT Search may include inline citations or a Sources panel when search ran, and a Reddit URL can show up there. There is no submission form, and I will not invent a citation percentage for your deck.
This is the operator how-to under the Answer Engine Optimization playbook. Why Reddit is in the retrieval neighborhood at all, and how vendor share tables swing, lives in Reddit for AI citations. Engine pick is ChatGPT vs Perplexity vs AI Overviews. Unique numbers that a thread can point at live in original research for AI citations. Lane work is /visibility.
I have been SEO certified since 2021. The AEO version of this work is still: find threads already in the neighborhood, add a dated human answer, then log sources. It is not a karma contest.
The short answer
- Start from threads already cited on your prompt panel. Do not invent a thread so you have somewhere to speak.
- Answer the question someone asked. Disclose if you work on the product. Link only when the page is the primary artifact.
- Perplexity is retrieval-first with numbered citations to original sources. Reddit URLs show up often on opinion prompts. Treat “often” as an observation to re-check, not a rate you report.
- ChatGPT Search is optional. If there is no Sources control, you logged a memory answer. A Reddit URL cannot appear in a source list that does not exist.
- Measure three rows: Reddit URL cited, brand named in that thread, owned URL riding along. Karma is not a KPI.
| Move | Operator action | Not a program |
|---|---|---|
| Harvest | Copy Reddit URLs from Perplexity footnotes and ChatGPT Sources | “We posted in 20 subs this morning” |
| Triage | Reply, dated correction, fix owned page, or stay out | “Engage for visibility” on a pile-on |
| Reply | Extractable fact + constraint + disclosure | Press-release comment with UTMs |
| Pair | Owned page states the same number the comment used | Thread is the only place the fact exists |
| Score | Frozen prompts, screenshots of source lists | A vendor “Reddit AEO %” with no query list |
Do this week, in order:
- Freeze 10–15 buyer prompts (recommendation, comparison, how-to)
- Run them in Perplexity Search and in ChatGPT with search on
- Paste every
reddit.comURL into a sheet - Mark each: brand named / competitor only / generic
- Write or fix one owned page that answers the dominant question those threads ask
- Ship at most a handful of disclosed replies in threads that already exist
If you cannot staff a human who can write one honest paragraph, you cannot staff Reddit. Stop before week two.
What does “cited through Reddit” actually mean?
It means a live reddit.com URL showed up as a source on an answer about your category — or a comment in that thread is the passage the model compressed. It does not mean Reddit submitted you to ChatGPT. It does not mean a moderator blessed your brand. It is corroboration sitting next to (or instead of) your domain.
Log three different objects. Mixing them is how a mention-only win becomes a fake win in the deck.
| Object | Where you see it | What it proves | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit URL cited | Perplexity numbered source; ChatGPT Sources / inline cite | The engine retrieved that thread for this prompt | That you were named, or that you posted |
| Brand named in the thread | You open the cited comments | Third-party language about you exists | That your site was cited |
| Owned URL riding along | Your domain in the same source list | Handoff from community talk to canonical facts | That the Reddit comment caused the site cite |
| Mention, no URL | Prose names you, no chip | Risky. Could be memory | A citation you can screenshot |
| Karma / upvote count | Reddit UI | Someone voted | Retrieval |
OpenAI’s own ChatGPT Search help is the unit for that product: responses that used search may include inline citations, and if they do not, Sources under the response lists the links. Perplexity’s Help Center is the unit for that product: each answer includes numbered citations linking to original sources. Your job is to make a thread worth retrieving, then make sure the lift-able sentence is true.
If the only Reddit URL in the list is a roast of a dump post you made, you got cited. That is not a win.
- You logged the URL from the product UI, not from memory
- You opened the thread and read the cited comment, not just the title
- Brand-named and owned-cited are separate columns
- A mention with no chip is not stored as a citation
How do Perplexity and ChatGPT Search treat a Reddit URL?
They do not treat it the same, so do not run one play and screenshot one engine. Perplexity searches the web for the question and footnotes what it used. ChatGPT may answer from training memory, or it may search; Reddit can only appear when search ran. Engine priority still follows where your buyers already ask.
| Surface | What “a Reddit cite” looks like | When Reddit shows up | Operator implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity Search | Numbered footnote to a thread or comment permalink | Often on opinion, comparison, “what do people use” prompts | Harvest footnotes first. Those threads are already in the neighborhood |
| ChatGPT Search | Inline cite and/or Sources panel | May surface Reddit when search ran | If Sources is missing, do not log a Reddit miss — search never happened |
| ChatGPT, memory only | No source list | Reddit cannot appear as a URL | Force search, or throw the row out |
| Google AI Overviews / AI Mode | Supporting link, if the thread is Search-eligible | Separate eligibility floor | Do not import a Perplexity Reddit mix onto Overviews |
OpenAI and Reddit have a content partnership via Reddit’s Data API. That is access, not a promise that your comment will be cited. Perplexity does not publish a Reddit citation rate for ordinary sites. Third-party studies keep finding Reddit in Perplexity source lists on those opinion prompts. I am not reprinting a share number here. Mixes move. Dated tables belong in the complementary spoke. Your panel is the number that matters.
- You know which engine the buyer actually uses for this job
- Perplexity rows log footnote numbers + URLs
- ChatGPT rows log “search used: yes/no” before you score Reddit
- You are not averaging the two products into one “Reddit %”
A comment that is useful in a retrieved thread can still fail to name you. That is a corroboration gap, not a crawl bug. Fix the sentence, or fix the owned page the next reply can point at.
What if only one engine cites the Reddit thread?
That is the normal state. Do not copy a Perplexity footnote into ChatGPT as if the second product will “learn” the thread. Retrieval neighborhoods barely overlap. Engine pick still follows where buyers already ask. Your sheet already splits products. Keep it that way.
| Pattern | What it means | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity cites Reddit; ChatGPT Search does not | Perplexity retrieved community proof; ChatGPT Search picked a different set | Keep harvesting Perplexity. Do not paste the thread into ChatGPT |
| ChatGPT Search cites Reddit; Perplexity does not | Search ran and pulled a community URL | Log it. Do not average the two rates |
| Both cite the same thread | Strong neighborhood for that prompt | Fix accuracy on that thread and on the owned page |
| Perplexity cites Reddit; ChatGPT names you with no Sources | Memory answer, not a Reddit cite | Force search on the next run. Do not log a Reddit miss |
| Neither cites Reddit on a “what do people use” prompt | You may not have a Reddit neighborhood | Do not farm one. Fund the owned page |
| Same thread, different comment permalinks | Engines pointed at different comments in one post | Deduplicate to the thread. Read both comments |
- Each row has one engine, not a blended “AI” column
- ChatGPT memory answers are tagged, not scored as Reddit losses
- You are not pasting Reddit URLs into the other product as a hack
- The owned page still states the fact even if only one engine cites the thread
A mismatch is data. It is not a bug in your comment. Work the engine your buyer uses. Keep a thin baseline on the other.
Which threads are worth answering this week?
A thread is worth answering when three things are true: an engine you care about already retrieves it (or Google already ranks it for the same question), the question matches a revenue prompt, and you can add a dated constraint without pitching. Viral launch threads you started fail that test. Quiet Q&A that already sits in a source list usually passes.
Score each candidate 0 or 1. Keep only totals of 4 or 5.
| Filter | Keep (1) | Skip (0) |
|---|---|---|
| Already in the neighborhood | URL appeared in your panel, or site:reddit.com already ranks for the prompt | You would have to create the post to have a URL |
| Question shape | How-to, comparison, “what broke,” “what would you use” | Launch, AMA-as-ad, roast-bait, hiring spam |
| You can add a fact | A number, limit, version, or failure mode the thread lacks | You can only repeat the slogan on the homepage |
| Temperature | Cool. People want an answer | Pile-on, smear, legal exhibit, culture-war bait |
| Rules | Self-promo allowed with disclosure, or you will not link | Zero self-promo and you cannot help without a URL |
Do not hunt “high karma.” The complementary spoke already covers why cited Reddit posts are often short, old, and low-score. Your job this week is neighborhood, not virality.
- The thread title is a question a buyer would type
- Top comments are still roughly true (or you can date a correction)
- You would post this if citations did not exist
- You can disclose in the comment itself, not only in the bio
- You have an owned URL ready if someone asks for the primary source
If the only threads you can find are vendor dump grounds, skip Reddit this month. Put the hours on the owned comparison page.
How do I find useful threads without farming them?
Harvest first. Search second. Never invent. The cheapest Reddit URL is one Perplexity already footnoted for a prompt you already run.
- Export Reddit URLs from this week’s Perplexity footnote list and ChatGPT Sources panel.
- Deduplicate by thread (ignore comment permalinks that point at the same post).
- Tag the subreddit, thread age, and whether your brand appears.
- For gaps — prompts with no Reddit URL — search Google:
site:reddit.com/r/{sub} "{buyer phrase}". - Inside the subreddit, search the same phrase and sort by New for the last month, then by Top for the last year.
- Stop when you have 15–25 candidate URLs. You do not need a hundred.
| Source of the URL | Why it is better | Trap |
|---|---|---|
| Already cited on your panel | Proven neighborhood | Treating one lucky cite as a calendar |
Google site:reddit.com for the prompt | Search-eligible, so other engines can find it too | Ranking ≠ currently cited. Still log it |
| Subreddit search, sort New | Fresh questions you can answer while they are still accurate | Answering every new post like a helpdesk |
| Competitor named in a cited thread | Corroboration gap you can close honestly | Smear, pile-on, or fake “as a user” reply |
| Your own old comment | You already have standing | Repeating the same paragraph in five subs |
Reddit’s sitewide rule is still participate authentically and do not spam. Finding threads is research. Cross-posting the same pitch into every result is the spam policy.
| Search you run | Keep | Discard |
|---|---|---|
site:reddit.com "vs" {your category} | Comparison threads with dated answers | Affiliate dump posts with 40 links |
"has anyone used" {product class} | Lived-experience Q&A | “We just launched” from a day-old account |
{error message} or {failure mode} | People stuck on a real job | Support tickets that belong in your help center |
| City + category | Only if your ICP actually hires locally from Reddit | Inventing a local presence you do not have |
You are looking for questions, not audiences to spray. If the search only returns your competitors’ launch posts, that is data: this subreddit is a dump ground. Leave.
Spend fifteen minutes in a subreddit before the first reply. Sidebar first, then automod, then what actually got removed this week. You are not scoring the subreddit for a brand campaign. You are checking whether a useful human answer can survive.
- Read the rules and the wiki. Note self-promo, vendor, and affiliate lines verbatim.
- Open three removed or locked threads if you can see them. Write down why they died.
- Read the last 20 posts. Count how many are questions vs dumps.
- Click two accounts that look like vendors. If their history is mostly links, that is the pattern mods already hate.
- Save the disclosure sentence you will use here. If you cannot disclose and still help, you are in the wrong sub.
| Recon check | Pass | Walk away |
|---|---|---|
| Rules | Readable self-promo rule, or you will not link | Unreadable, or “no vendors, no exceptions” and you are a vendor |
| Recent posts | Buyers ask weekly | Founders selling to each other |
| Enforcement | Obvious dumps die fast | Dump posts sit on the front page |
| Your history in the sub | You can answer without a URL | You have nothing to say except the homepage |
| Account age / karma gates | You can comment today | Automod will eat a new account before a human sees it |
Do not make a branded subreddit so you have somewhere to post. A branded sub is a support surface if customers would use it anyway. It is a press room if the only posts are launch threads you wrote.
Reply, correct, or stay out?
Most candidate threads should get “stay out.” The program fails when the default is “we should be in every conversation.” Pick one action per URL. Write it on the sheet before you open the comment box.
| Situation | Action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Category how-to, you can add a constraint the top comments lack | Reply | Matches the useful-thread shape |
| Thread is cited, fact about you is stale or wrong | Dated correction + fix the owned page the same day | Stale threads keep getting retrieved |
| Thread is cited, you are absent, a competitor is named fairly | Optional honest reply, or win a roundup elsewhere | Absence is not an emergency |
| Thread is locked, archived, or the cited comment is deleted | Fix the owned page; do not necro-post | You cannot edit a retrieved corpse |
| You cannot help without a pitch | Stay out | A removed pitch becomes the remaining comment |
| Active pile-on about your product | Monitor. Do not “engage for visibility” | You become gasoline |
| Medical, legal, or financial personal advice | Stay out or point at a licensed source | Engines lift the confidence, not the caveat |
| Someone asked for the primary source and you have one | Link the owned page once, no UTM circus | This is the only clean link moment |
- Action written on the row before composing
- Disclosure template ready if you represent the company
- Owned page already states the same fact you are about to type
- Legal / comms path exists for pile-ons
- Explicit ban on second accounts “just to get the conversation started”
US brands have a disclosure duty when there is a material connection. The FTC Endorsement Guides treat undisclosed employee reviews and fake independent takes as deception problems. A bio line is not enough if the comment reads as an unaffiliated review.
Stay-out is a result. It is not a failed sprint.
What does a useful reply contain, and what is spam?
A useful reply is a lift-able answer to the question in the title. Spam is repeated or unsolicited mass engagement, especially when your history is mostly links to a business you benefit from. Reddit’s Spam help article is the floor. Mods are the rest. This is not an astroturf playbook. If you need a second account, a vote pod, or a generative bot to hit volume, you are already in the failure mode.
Write the comment in this order:
- Sentence one answers the question as asked.
- Two to five constraints, steps, or if/then lines.
- One failure mode (“this breaks when…”).
- Affiliation in the first or second sentence if you have a material connection.
- A link only if they asked for a source, or the page holds the unique number.
| Useful | Spam / astroturf |
|---|---|
| “For N seats, start with X. Skip Z if you lack a human owner.” | “Check our platform, link in bio” |
| “We ship A; competitors often win on B. Here’s how I’d choose.” | “We’re the leaders in…” |
| Dated correction of a number the thread got wrong | Ghost “happy customer” from payroll |
| One permalink to the methods page when asked | Same paragraph in five subs the same afternoon |
| Disclosure visible in the comment | Disclosure hidden in the profile |
Reddit’s spam examples include mass-posting repetitive content, unsolicited chat, and tools (including generative tools) that facilitate spam. Do not automate replies. A scheduled “helpful” comment is still a dump.
- You would still post this if the Sources panel did not exist
- At least one number, version, limit, or failure mode
- Zero UTM parameters
- Zero “as a random user” voice from someone on payroll
- You have not posted this paragraph anywhere else today
If the comment only works as a brand anthem, delete it. The engine will paraphrase anyway. Give it a fact, not a slogan.
How do owned pages and Reddit work as a pair?
Reddit corroborates. Your site is the canonical artifact. If the only place a number exists is a comment, the next retrieval can drop you, mis-attribute you, or keep citing a three-year-old thread that you no longer stand behind. Put the unique fact on an owned URL first. Then, if someone asks, point at it.
That pairing is the same job as original research for AI citations: a dated number with n, population, and method, in HTML, that a third party can repeat with your URL attached.
| Layer | Job | Failure if you skip it |
|---|---|---|
| Owned page | Canonical who / what / number / constraint | Thread gets cited; answer still hallucinates your offer |
| Reddit comment | Lived-experience corroboration in a retrieved thread | You have a pretty page nobody repeats |
| Source list | Engine shows both, or Reddit then your domain | Mention-only win with no site citation |
| Schema / About | Entity facts match the comment | Comment says one city; About says another |
Do this sequence. Do not reverse it.
- Publish or fix the owned page so the first 60–80 words stand alone.
- Put one table or procedure on that page — the same shape you might type into Reddit.
- Confirm the number on About, the service URL, and the comment would not contradict each other.
- Reply in the existing thread with the constraint, not with the full essay.
- Link once if they asked, or if the methods live only on that URL.
| Comment claim | Owned-page match | Do not |
|---|---|---|
| “We only take projects above $X” | Pricing or FAQ states $X | Comment invents a floor the site does not show |
| “This fails under N seats” | Comparison page has the same N | Different N on three URLs |
| “Shipped since 2021” | About / credentials match | Inflating a receipt in the thread |
| Unique survey number | Methods page with date and n | Inventing a statistic so the comment looks dense |
I will not invent a study so you have something clever to paste into r/SaaS. If you do not have a number, write the constraint you actually operate under. That is still citeable.
What is the weekly operator cadence?
This is hygiene on threads that already exist. It is not a campaign to manufacture consensus, and it is not the four-week map in the complementary spoke. One named owner. A short weekly loop. Volume is the tell that you drifted into spam.
| Day | Work | Done looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | Re-run the frozen panel in Perplexity and ChatGPT Search | Spreadsheet updated; search-used flag on every ChatGPT row |
| Tue | Triage new Reddit URLs: reply / correct / fix-owned / stay out | Every new URL has an action, including stay-out |
| Wed | Ship 1–3 disclosed replies max. Never the same paragraph twice | Comments live; no second account |
| Thu | Ship or patch the owned page that the threads actually ask | First 60 words stand alone |
| Fri | Screenshot source lists. Log removals. Queue next week’s one page | Archive dated. Karma ignored |
Cap replies. If you need more than a handful a week, you are spraying. Reddit’s own guidance: if contributions are primarily links to a business you benefit from, slow down or use ads. Some communities also run a roughly 10% self-promo rule; mods adjudicate.
- One named owner, two backups — not “anyone on marketing”
- Reply cap written down (start at three per week)
- Same paragraph banned across subs
- No bots, no ghost accounts, no vote asks
- Friday archive includes “search used” for ChatGPT
If week one requires inventing a thread so you have somewhere to speak, you are done. Close the loop and go back to the owned page.
How do I measure this without a fake citation rate?
You measure URLs on a frozen prompt panel. You do not measure a Reddit-wide percentage, because vendors do not publish your rate, and third-party shares are not your category. Screenshot the source list. Then open the thread.
One row per prompt per engine:
| Column | What you write | Legal values |
|---|---|---|
prompt_id | Stable ID | string |
engine | Product you actually ran | Perplexity Search / ChatGPT Search |
search_used | ChatGPT only | yes / no / n/a |
reddit_url | Full URL from footnotes or Sources | URL or none |
url_type | What the engine actually linked | thread / comment permalink / other |
brand_in_thread | Named in cited comments | yes / no / competitor-only |
owned_cited | Your domain in the same list | yes / no + URL |
thread_state | Can a human still add a fact | open / locked / archived / deleted |
action | This week’s move | reply / correct / fix-owned / stay-out |
removed | Mod removal or spam filter | yes / no |
Log the URL the engine showed, then normalize to the thread. Comment permalinks are useful for reading the lift-able sentence. They are a bad unique key. Two footnotes that look like “two Reddit cites” are often one post.
| URL the engine showed | How to log it | What you do |
|---|---|---|
/r/{sub}/comments/{id}/… | One thread row | Read top comments + the cited one |
Comment permalink (…/comment/{id}/) | Same thread id; note which comment | Reply there only if the comment is still the wrong fact |
| Locked or archived thread | thread_state=locked | Owned-page correction only |
| Deleted comment, thread remains | thread_state=deleted on that comment | Do not rebuild the comment as a pitch |
| Reddit search page, not a thread | Discard | That is not a source you can corroborate |
Healthy direction is boring:
| Metric | Healthy | Trap |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit URLs on opinion prompts | Present when the question is “what do people use” | Forcing Reddit onto regulated fact prompts |
| Brand-in-thread | Rising without removals | Buying engagement |
| Owned handoff | Rising | Celebrating Reddit mentions with zero site citations |
| Removals | Zero for spam | “Engagement” from flame wars |
| Invented citation % | Never used | Pasting a vendor pie chart as if it were yours |
Re-run monthly at minimum; weekly if this is a live bet. The complementary spoke is the receipt for why an annual screenshot lies. I am not going to quote a ChatGPT or Perplexity Reddit share here so someone pastes it into a Q3 slide.
When you screenshot:
- Prompt text visible in the frame.
- Engine + date in the filename (
pplx-rec-04-2026-08-14.png). - Footnotes or Sources panel expanded so the Reddit URL is readable.
- ChatGPT: Sources control visible, or a note that it was absent.
If you cannot see the URL in the image, you do not have a receipt.
- Panel frozen (prompt IDs, engines, date)
- ChatGPT rows discarded when search did not run
- Perplexity rows include the footnote number
- Removals logged
- No percentage invented for leadership
If ninety days of this loop produce only arguments and no movement on those three objects, stop. Reallocate to owned answer pages and editorial corroboration.
What usually fails first?
The first failure is almost never “we picked the wrong subreddit.” It is a brand-new account dumping a UTM link into a question nobody asked you to answer. Mods remove it. The remaining comments are the roast. The next Perplexity run can footnote that thread. You got cited. You got cited as the dump.
What it costs: a durable, retrievable story that you spam Reddit, plus a week of comms residue, plus a comment history that makes the next honest reply look like the same play.
What you do instead: harvest cited threads, answer one of them as a human with a disclosure, and put the fact on your site.
| First-week failure | What it looks like | What engines can still retrieve | Do this instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Link dump | Day-old account, three URLs, zero answers | The roast, the removal notice | Answer first. Link never, or once when asked |
| Ghost customer | Payroll writing “as a user” | The later outing thread | Disclosure in sentence one or two |
| Volume | Same paragraph, five subs, one afternoon | A pattern mods already know | Cap at a handful. Different facts if you comment twice |
| Invented thread | You posted the question so you could answer it | A marketing post with no neighborhood | Stay in threads that already exist |
| Karma as KPI | Bought votes, vote asks, pods | Sitewide disrupting-communities residue | Ignore score |
| Fake rate | “Reddit is N% of Perplexity so we will be cited” | Nothing. You lied in the deck | Panel screenshots only |
Vote manipulation and coordinated voting are disrupting-communities problems on Reddit. I am not going to teach the mechanics. The operator rule is: do not buy votes, do not run a second account to agree with yourself, do not have an agency puppet “customers.” If the program only works at that volume, you do not have a program.
A silent corporate account that only posts launch threads fails the same way. The thread that remains is the roast.
What should I skip if I only have a week?
Skip the brand-new corporate account, the twenty-subreddit calendar, the AMA, and anything that requires inventing a conversation. A week is triage plus one owned page plus two replies, or it is a wasted week.
| Do in five days | Skip |
|---|---|
| Freeze 10–15 prompts | A “Reddit AEO campaign” deck |
| Harvest Reddit URLs already in Perplexity and ChatGPT Search | Opening accounts in 20 subs |
| Fix one owned URL that answers the dominant question | Five new blog posts |
| Two disclosed replies in existing threads | An AMA, a launch post, a vote ask |
| Screenshot the source lists on Friday | Reporting a citation percentage |
Day-by-day if that is all the time you have:
- Monday: freeze prompts, run Perplexity, run ChatGPT Search, paste Reddit URLs.
- Tuesday: pick the one question those threads keep asking. Patch that owned page.
- Wednesday: lurk the two subreddits those URLs live in. Read rules. Do not post yet.
- Thursday: two replies, disclosed, no UTM. Stay out of everything else.
- Friday: re-run the same prompts. Archive. Do not declare victory.
- No new subreddit invented
- No second account
- No generative auto-replies
- Owned page live before the second reply
- Friday archive exists even if both replies sat at one upvote
If the harvest step returns zero Reddit URLs on your actual buyer prompts, do not spend the rest of the week forcing Reddit. That is a neighborhood miss. Spend it on the owned page and on surfaces that already appear in the source list.
When is this not worth doing yet?
Skip Reddit-for-citations until three floors exist: buyers already ask the question in public subs, you have one owned page that states the offer without contradicting itself, and a named human can write a disclosed paragraph this week. If any floor is missing, Reddit work is theater.
| Situation | Verdict | Put the hours here instead |
|---|---|---|
Panel never shows reddit.com on your prompts, and Google site:reddit.com is empty for the same phrases | Skip | Owned comparison pages; editorial corroboration |
| You have no extractable offer sentence on the money URL | Not yet | Five-page AI-visibility set, starting with that URL |
| No human owner | Skip | Do not “automate Reddit” |
| Category is YMYL personal advice | Skip or legal-gated | Primary sources, named experts — not a comment pile |
| One roast would become a legal exhibit | Skip | Comms + owned corrections |
| You already get cited on-site and in press, Reddit is vanity | Optional | Maintain; do not invent a program to look busy |
A 90-day check is enough.
| Outcome after 90 days | Keep going | Stop |
|---|---|---|
| Cited Reddit URLs name you accurately, no spam removals | Keep | Raw karma up, citations flat |
| Owned URL rides along on the same answers | Keep | Mentions without a site cite, every time |
| Zero mod removals for spam | Keep | You are writing more comments to “catch up” |
| Panel still has no Reddit neighborhood | Stop | You are creating threads to have somewhere to post |
Reddit is optional corroboration. It is not a tax every brand must pay. If your ICP never posts there, you are not behind. You are in a different neighborhood. Work the neighborhood you are actually in.
- Buyers already ask the question in a public sub you can name
- Money URL states the offer in HTML without contradicting About
- Named human can write a disclosed paragraph this week
- Legal has not vetoed the category
- You are willing to stay out of most threads
FAQ
How do I get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity through Reddit?
You get cited when a useful thread those engines already retrieve contains a lift-able fact — not when you spam a landing page. Harvest Reddit URLs from Perplexity footnotes and from ChatGPT Sources when search ran, then answer those threads as a disclosed human. Pair each fact with an owned page. There is no submission form and no citation rate I can print for your category.
How do I measure whether do I get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity through Reddit is working?
Measure URLs on a frozen prompt panel, not karma and not a vendor pie chart. Log whether a reddit.com URL appeared, whether you are named in that thread, and whether your domain rode along in the same source list. For ChatGPT, throw out rows where search did not run. Re-run on a fixed cadence and keep screenshots.
What usually fails first when teams try this?
A new account dumps a UTM link into a thread that did not ask. Mods remove it, and the roast is what later retrieval can cite. Ghost “customer” accounts and repeated paragraphs across subs fail the same week. Harvest existing threads, disclose, and cap volume before you write the second comment.
How long does this take to show results?
There is no published SLA. Old threads already in the neighborhood can appear in a source list the next time you run the panel; a comment you posted this week might sit for months or never appear. Run a 90-day loop with weekly harvest. If the neighborhood was empty on day one, do not wait 90 days hoping volume will create it — stop and fund owned pages.
What should I skip if I only have a week?
Skip new accounts, AMAs, twenty-subreddit calendars, and any thread you would have to invent. Spend the week harvesting already-cited Reddit URLs, fixing one owned page that answers those questions, and shipping at most two disclosed replies. If the harvest is empty, stop posting and fix the site.
When is this not worth doing yet?
Skip it when buyers never ask in public subs, when the money URL still contradicts itself, or when you have no human who can write a disclosed answer. Reddit cannot repair a missing entity page. It is optional corroboration on top of crawlable, extractable facts — not a substitute for them.

- There is no published SLA.
- What should I skip if I only have a week?
- Skip new accounts, AMAs, twenty-subreddit calendars, and any thread you would have to invent. Spend the week harvesting already-cited Reddit URLs, fixing one owned page that answers those questions, and shipping at most two disclosed replies. If the harvest is empty, stop posting and fix the site.
- When is this not worth doing yet?
- Skip it when buyers never ask in public subs, when the money URL still contradicts itself, or when you have no human who can write a disclosed answer. Reddit cannot repair a missing entity page. It is optional corroboration on top of crawlable, extractable facts — not a substitute for them.

AI Visibility
AI Visibility Cannabis visibility when the ad accounts are banned
Google and Meta will not take the usual spend. The models still answer dispensary, cultivator, and brand questions — if the site can be read and the cart can clear a 21+ order.
AI Visibility When ChatGPT names the franchise, not your shop
Run the best-HVAC-near-me prompt panel. If the model names a national franchise, fix corroboration and entity facts — not another blog calendar.
AI Visibility What belongs in an AI visibility monthly retainer vs a one-time audit
A one-time audit is the baseline plus prioritized fixes. A monthly retainer is prompt-panel tracking, entity hygiene, page jobs, and citation recovery.
AI Visibility Does Wikipedia or Wikidata help AI recommend my brand
Wikipedia is not a paid AI lever. Notability plus independent sources decide the page; a real Wikidata item helps entity consistency, not a promotional stub.
