AI Visibility Is Inclusion in the Answer — Not a Ranking
AI visibility is whether answer engines name or cite you on buyer prompts — not your Google rank. Track mention rate, citation rate, and share of voice.
William Spurlock Founder — Spurlock Studios Updated 22 MIN
AI visibility is whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and similar answer surfaces name or cite your brand when a buyer asks a question that should put you in the room. It is not your blue-link rank. You can sit #1 on Google and still have zero AI visibility if the answer never includes you.
Semrush’s 2026 definition matches that operator test: AI visibility is how often a brand is mentioned, cited, or recommended in AI-generated responses (Semrush: AI visibility). This post is the scoreboard definition behind the Answer Engine Optimization playbook. The three numbers that make the scoreboard honest are mention rate, citation rate, and share of voice.
The short answer
- AI visibility = inclusion in the generated answer (name, cite, or both)
- SEO rank = position in a list of links; related crawl, different win condition
- Mention = named. Citation = credited as a source. Share of voice = your slice vs a frozen competitor set
- Rank #1 with zero citations is a common failure mode, not a paradox
- Fix entities, extractable answers, and corroboration before buying another dashboard
What is AI visibility in operator terms?
Treat AI visibility as a yes/no (or rate) on a fixed prompt panel: for each buyer-relevant question, does the product include you?
| Outcome | What you see | What it means | Log as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cited | Your URL or clear source attribution | Strongest inclusion signal | cited: yes + URL |
| Mentioned only | Brand named, no link or credit | Soft inclusion; weak for trust | mentioned: yes, cited: no |
| Absent | Competitors or generics only | Zero visibility on that prompt | both no |
| Wrong | Facts about you are false | Negative visibility — risk | accuracy: fail |
If your weekly ritual cannot produce that table, you do not have an AI visibility program. You have anecdotes.
Pew’s February 2026 survey of 5,119 U.S. adults found that 60% say they read AI summaries at the top of search results, and about half now use AI chatbots (Pew Research Center). Buyers are already hearing answers. The operator question is whether those answers include you.
What is a mention vs a citation vs share of voice?
These three terms get mashed into one slide labeled “AI visibility %.” That mash is the reporting failure this post exists to stop.
| Term | Definition | What the buyer sees | What it is not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mention | Your brand string appears in the answer | “I’ve heard of them” | Proof, a click path, or a source |
| Citation | The answer credits your URL, footnote, source chip, or explicit attribution | “Here’s where that claim came from” | A guarantee they clicked |
| Share of voice (SOV) | Your mentions ÷ (you + named competitors) on the same frozen panel | Relative presence in the room | A substitute for mention or citation rate |
Semrush draws the same four-way split: mention, citation, source, and AI share of voice. A mention is the brand appearing inside the answer. A citation is a linked reference to your content. A source is a page the system retrieved to build the answer. AI SoV is how visible you are relative to competitors, expressed as a percentage (Semrush: measure AI share of voice).
Operator test: delete every link and source chip from the answer. What still names you is a mention. What disappeared was the citation surface. What the model fetched but never showed is a source — retrieved, not credited.
You can be mentioned without being cited. You can be cited without a flashy brand shout-out. You can have a high mention rate and a low SOV if the panel also names five competitors every run. The mentions vs citations spoke is the deep dive on the first two columns. This post keeps all three on one scoreboard.
- Mention logged as a binary on the prompt, not a screenshot vibe
- Citation logged only when a URL, footnote, or explicit source credit is visible
- SOV computed against a frozen competitor set, not whoever showed up that week
- Retrieved-but-uncited sources (when a product exposes them) stay in a separate column
How do you compute mention rate, citation rate, and SOV without lying?
Write the formulas on the sheet before you open a tool. Vendor dashboards will not save you if the columns mean different things to finance and to the person running prompts.
| Metric | DIY formula | Cadence | Common lie |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | Runs where brand is named ÷ panel runs | Weekly | Counting a brand-prompt “who is Acme?” as a category win |
| Citation rate | Runs where your domain is credited ÷ panel runs | Weekly | Counting a competitor roundup that names you as your citation |
| Share of voice | Your mentions ÷ (your mentions + named competitors) | Weekly | Changing the competitor set when the number looks bad |
| Fact accuracy | Runs with no material error ÷ runs that mention you | Weekly | Ignoring wrong pricing because “at least they named us” |
| First-source rate | Runs where you are the primary cite ÷ cited runs | Monthly | Treating any cite as a first-source win |
Semrush’s knowledge base defines share of voice as the percentage of mentions your brand receives in AI-generated answers compared to competitors, and citations as the number of AI responses that cite your domain as a source (Semrush: AI Visibility Metrics). Their Brand Performance report also weights how high the brand appears. DIY SOV (count-only) and a position-weighted vendor SOV are not the same number. Label which one you are reporting.
Worked example on a 30-prompt panel, one product, one week:
| Brand | Mentions | Citations | Mention rate | Citation rate | SOV (mentions) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| You | 9 | 3 | 30% | 10% | 9 ÷ (9+12+6) = 33% |
| Competitor A | 12 | 8 | 40% | 27% | 44% |
| Competitor B | 6 | 5 | 20% | 17% | 22% |
You are “visible” on mention rate. You are losing on citations. If you average those into one 24% “visibility score,” the content team will write more brand-name blog posts instead of citeable comparison tables. Keep the columns.
- Freeze the prompt list and the competitor list in the same sheet
- Run each prompt in each in-scope product the same day
- Score mention, citation URL, accuracy, and who else was named
- Compute the three rates before you write the deck sentence
- Do not drop a prompt because it made you look absent
Which prompts count toward the rate?
A rate with a sloppy denominator is a slogan. Brand prompts, category prompts, and how-to prompts do not belong in one blended percentage unless you also report the blend.
| Bucket | Example prompt | What a “win” means | Mixing risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand | “What does [you] cost?” | Accurate mention; citation of your pricing or offer page | Inflates mention rate; tells you nothing about category demand |
| Recommendation | “Best [category] for [job]” | Named on the shortlist; cited if a source chip exists | The revenue bucket. Do not hide it inside brand prompts |
| Comparison | “[You] vs [competitor]” | Named and factually contrasted; your URL cited | Competitor pages often win the cite even when you are named |
| How-to | “How do I [job the product does]?” | Your method URL cited | Mentions are rare; citation is the KPI |
| Local | “Best [service] in [city]” | NAP-accurate mention; Maps or site cited | GBP fire drills do not belong in a national SaaS panel |
Build the panel from sales notes and lost-deal reasons, not from a keyword tool’s “people also ask” dump. Twenty-five prompts you can re-run beat eighty prompts you will abandon in week three.
- Each prompt has a bucket tag
- Revenue-tagged prompts are scored as their own mention / citation / SOV
- Brand prompts are a separate accuracy watch, not a victory lap
- Local and national prompts never share a single SOV
- You can point to the sales call or ticket that justified each recommendation prompt
If someone wants one number for the board, give them recommendation-bucket citation rate. That is the number that changes pipeline. Brand-prompt mention rate is a hygiene check.
Share of voice is the most abused of the three columns because it sounds like advertising. It is not ad SOV, not classic SERP SOV, and not “how much of the internet talks about us.”
| Phrase | Actual meaning | Use it for AI visibility? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid media SOV | Your ad impressions ÷ category ad impressions | No. Different auction |
| Classic SEO SOV | Weighted rank presence across a keyword set | Related crawl, different unit |
| Social SOV | Brand posts / mentions on social | Input to models, not the answer KPI |
| AI SOV (this post) | Your named appearances ÷ (you + frozen competitors) on the panel | Yes — and only this |
Semrush’s simple formula is (your AI mentions ÷ total AI mentions across brands in the category) × 100. Their Brand Performance report then adds position weighting (Semrush: measure AI share of voice). If you put a vendor SOV next to last quarter’s DIY SOV, you invented a trend.
SOV also breaks when the competitor set is dishonest:
- You omit the category leader so your slice looks larger
- You add a no-name so the denominator grows and nobody looks dominant
- You let the tool auto-suggest adjacent brands from another vertical
- You recompute SOV only on prompts you already win
Freeze three to six names that sales actually loses to. Write them at the top of the sheet. Changing the set is a new baseline, not a growth story.
How is AI visibility different from SEO rankings?
SEO rankings answer: which URLs appear for a query, and in what order. AI visibility answers: who gets woven into the synthesized reply.
Shared foundation:
- Crawlable, indexable pages
- Clear entities and consistent facts
- Useful, extractable content
Different scoreboard:
| Dimension | Classic SEO | AI visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Primary unit | Page / keyword | Prompt / answer |
| Win condition | Rank + CTR | Mention, cite, accurate SOV |
| Failure mode | Dropped out of the top 10 | Named wrong or not at all |
| Lagging signal | Organic sessions | AI referrals + brand search |
| “I won” screenshot | Green #1 in a rank tracker | Your URL in the source chip |
Google is explicit that AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on ordinary Search eligibility. To appear as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements (Google Search Central: AI features). That is eligibility. Eligibility is not inclusion. AEO and SEO share the crawl. They do not share the KPI.
Confusing them is how teams celebrate a ranking win while buyers hear a competitor’s name in chat.
Why can I rank #1 and still have zero AI visibility?
Because answer engines optimize for a quotable, corroborated passage — not for your green #1 badge. Google also says AI Overviews are only shown when the system decides they are additive to classic Search, and as such they often do not trigger (Google Search Central: AI features). Absence of an Overview is not a citation failure. Absence of your name when an Overview or chat answer does fire on a buyer prompt is.
Common causes:
- The page ranks, but the answer lives in a non-extractable blob (hero fluff, JS-only copy)
nosnippetor a tightmax-snippetkills Overview eligibility- Competitors own the roundups and forum threads the model retrieves
- About / entity facts conflict across the web
- You blocked search or retrieval bots while leaving training bots alone — or the reverse mess
Google’s robots meta spec is blunt: nosnippet applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode and prevents the content from being used as a direct input for those features. max-snippet limits how much may be used as direct input (Google robots meta tags). Google’s May 2025 site-owner note says the same controls — nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, noindex — limit how content is featured in AI experiences (Google Search Central Blog).
Diagnostic checklist when rank and inclusion diverge:
- View-source shows the answer in HTML, not only after a client render
- Robots meta is not
nosnippeton the money pages - Organization name, URL, and
sameAstargets match the homepage - A third-party page states the same facts you state
- The prompt you care about actually triggers an answer, not a classic SERP
Rank is necessary for some surfaces. It is never sufficient for all.
Which AI products belong on the scoreboard?
Start where buyers actually ask. Default trio for most B2B and consumer brands in 2026:
- ChatGPT (buyer-relevant browsing / search modes)
- Perplexity
- Google AI Overviews on priority queries — plus AI Mode when that is how your buyers keep asking
Add Copilot, Claude, or Gemini when sales call recordings prove those surfaces. Do not dilute a 40-prompt panel across eight products before you can trend three.
| Surface | What “cited” looks like | What “mentioned only” looks like |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | Inline citation or a source in the Sources panel | Brand named in prose, no source chip |
| Perplexity | Numbered citation you can open | Name in the summary, cite goes elsewhere |
| Google AI Overviews / AI Mode | Your URL as a supporting link | Brand named in the summary, link is a roundup |
| Claude / Gemini with web tools | Visible source attribution | Name without a fetchable URL |
OpenAI documents that ChatGPT search responses may include inline citations you can hover and click, and a Sources panel when inline cites are hidden (OpenAI Help Center: ChatGPT Search). The API is even clearer: inline citations are a subset of what the model retrieved. The sources field returns the complete list of URLs consulted; that list is often longer than the citations shown (OpenAI: Web search). Retrieved is not cited. Cited is not mentioned. Log them separately.
Priority decision: baseline the trio, then spend on the one surface that shows up in call recordings. Budget questions belong in is AEO worth it, not in a 12-product tracker nobody updates.
What does retrieved vs cited vs named mean on one answer?
One ChatGPT or Overview response can put you in three different states at once. Operators who only scrape brand strings miss two of them.
| State | Evidence | Pipeline value |
|---|---|---|
| Retrieved | URL appears in a hidden source list, tool log, or “visited pages” UI | Weak — you were in the pile |
| Cited | URL or title shown as a source on the answer | Strong — credit and a click path |
| Named | Brand string in the prose | Awareness — only as good as the facts attached |
OpenAI’s split between annotations (cited URLs) and sources (consulted URLs) is the cleanest vendor admission that retrieval volume is not citation volume (OpenAI: Web search). Semrush’s “source” row is the same idea in marketing language: a page the system used to build the answer, which may or may not become a visible citation (Semrush: measure AI share of voice).
If a junior marketer reports “we were in the answer” after seeing the brand in a hidden source list, correct the language in the meeting. Retrieved is homework. Cited is the grade.
- Capture the visible answer text
- Capture every visible citation URL
- Capture hidden/retrieved URLs only if the product exposes them
- Mark named / cited / retrieved as three flags
- Never promote a retrieved-only row into the citation rate
What does negative visibility look like?
Wrong facts about you are not a participation trophy. They are negative visibility: the model put you in the room and then misstated price, geography, category, or a dead product.
| Error class | Example | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Confuses you with a similarly named company | Fix sameAs, About, and directory NAP |
| Offer | Invents a package you do not sell | Publish a plain-language offer page; correct the third-party page it cited |
| Geography | Says you serve a city you do not | Service-area sentence on the homepage and GBP |
| Stale | Cites a 2022 press release as current | Update or noindex the zombie; publish a dated replacement |
| Sentiment | Repeats a resolved complaint as current | Respond on the source; publish the fix in extractable prose |
Accuracy is a rate on the runs that mention you, not on the whole panel. If you are named on 8 of 30 prompts and 3 of those 8 are wrong, accuracy is 63% — not 90% because 27 prompts were silent.
schema.org Organization is the vocabulary for the identity layer. Use it for facts that are also visible on the page, not as a hidden second website (schema.org Organization). Markup does not mint citations. Contradictory markup mints errors.
- Every material error gets a source URL, not just a “ChatGPT was wrong” Slack
- The on-site fact and the cited third-party fact are both on a fix list
- Re-run the same prompt after the fix; do not assume the model noticed
How do AI visibility, AEO, and GEO stay in their lanes?
| Term | Job | You say it when |
|---|---|---|
| AI visibility | The outcome: are you in the answer? | Reporting mention, citation, SOV, accuracy |
| AEO | The practice of earning inclusion in answer engines | Scoping work, sprints, audits |
| GEO | Research-flavored framing for generative engines | Citing the literature or a vendor that uses the term |
The founding GEO paper — Aggarwal et al., “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” — treated visibility as a measurable property of generated answers and showed that adding statistics, quotations, and citations could boost source visibility by up to 40% on their benchmark (arXiv:2311.09735). That is a tactic paper. It is not a license to rename your KPI “GEO score.”
You measure visibility. You practice AEO. You may borrow GEO tactics (statistics, citeable structure) without renaming the program. The playbook is the system map. This post is the outcome definition.
When is AI visibility not the first fire?
Wait — or keep investment tiny — when:
- You have no crawlable site or broken indexation
- Core offers and NAP are still changing weekly
- Google Maps / GBP is the only demand channel and it is on fire
- Category demand is near zero (no one asks the prompts)
- You cannot staff even a weekly panel for 30 days
In those cases, fix foundation SEO and ops first. AEO on a moving entity is painting a train. The budget gate is is AEO worth it. This post does not argue you into a retainer. It argues you into a definition you can defend.
| Situation | First move | Visibility work |
|---|---|---|
| Site not indexed | Search Console + crawl | Pause |
| NAP / offer still moving | Freeze the facts | Baseline only |
| Maps is the business | GBP + reviews | Add local prompts later |
| No one will run a panel | Do not buy a tool | No program yet |
| Buyers already ask AI | Freeze panel + competitors | Full scoreboard |
What slide belongs in the deck?
Executives need one slide that survives a board meeting. Keyword rankings without citation rate is an SEO slide wearing an AEO costume.
- Panel size and buckets (recommendation, comparison, how-to, brand, local)
- Products in scope — and why those, not eight
- Mention rate this month vs last
- Citation rate this month vs last
- SOV vs the frozen competitor set
- Top 3 accuracy incidents, each with a source URL
- Top 5 gap URLs (who got cited instead)
- Which formula you used for SOV (count-only vs vendor-weighted)
If finance asks “what’s our AI visibility?”, answer with three numbers and the panel size. “We’re at 41%” with no denominator is how the next quarter gets wasted.
Search Console tells you something adjacent and useful. It is not the AI visibility scoreboard. It does not produce mention rate, citation rate, or SOV.
Google reports sites that appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the overall Performance report, under the Web search type. There is no separate “AI visibility” score in Search Console. Google also says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality — more time on site (Google Search Central: AI features). That is a traffic-quality claim, not an inclusion rate.
| Signal | What it measures | What it cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console clicks / impressions | Google Search traffic, including some AI-feature surfaces mixed into Web | Whether ChatGPT named you |
| Analytics referral from a known AI host | Lagging sessions that left the chat | Mentions with no click |
| Rank tracker | Blue-link position | Whether an Overview cited you |
| Prompt panel log | Mention, citation, SOV, accuracy | Tomorrow’s organic sessions |
Use Search Console to diagnose crawl and snippet eligibility. Use the panel to score inclusion. If you only watch sessions, you will miss every unlinked mention that still put a competitor in the shortlist.
- Search Console is verified and the money pages are indexed
- You are not treating a Web-type impression lift as a citation win
- AI-host referrals have a UTM or hostname list, separate from the panel
- The weekly scoreboard still comes from logged answers, not from GSC
Log one row per prompt × product × date. If you collapse products into one cell, you will not see that ChatGPT cites you and Overviews do not.
| Column | Example | Rule |
|---|---|---|
date | 2026-08-16 | Same calendar day for the full panel |
product | ChatGPT search | One product per row |
prompt_id | REC-07 | Stable ID; never reuse for a rewritten prompt |
bucket | recommendation | Brand / recommendation / comparison / how-to / local |
mentioned | yes | Brand string in the visible answer |
cited | no | Visible URL, footnote, or source chip only |
cited_url | — | Empty unless cited is yes |
competitors_named | A, B | The frozen set plus write-ins |
accuracy | pass / fail / n/a | n/a when you were not mentioned |
notes | Cited G2 roundup | Who got the URL instead |
That row is the atomic unit of AI visibility. Dashboards that will not export something this boring are decorations.
- Duplicate last week’s sheet, do not overwrite
- Run prompts in the listed order so fatigue hits the same tail each week
- Paste a short excerpt of the answer, not a full transcript
- Score the three flags before you move to the next prompt
- Compute rates only after the last row is filled
Failure mode: dashboard theater
What breaks: someone buys an “AI visibility” SaaS, screenshots a green trend line, and never freezes a prompt panel or competitor set. Or they merge mention and citation into one vanity %.
What it costs: a quarter of content that never moves recommendation prompts; leadership believes the problem is solved; finance funds brand-name blog posts instead of citeable pages.
What you do instead:
- Freeze 25–40 prompts and 3–6 competitors
- Log weekly by hand for 30 days
- Only then decide which tool automates the ritual
- Tie every content ticket to a prompt ID
- Keep mention, citation, and SOV as separate columns in the tool, or do not buy the tool
Tools amplify a ritual. They do not replace one. Semrush (or similar) helps with SERP features, competitive URL discovery, and — if you trust the methodology — a vendor SOV. Keep chat/answer logging as its own sheet unless you have verified the automation path against a hand-scored week.
Google-Extended is a useful reminder that “AI” is not one switch. That robots.txt token controls Gemini-apps / Vertex grounding use of crawled content and does not change Search inclusion or ranking (Google common crawlers). Blocking training or grounding is a product decision. It is not an AI visibility strategy, and it will not explain a missing Overview citation.
A four-week scoreboard before a full program
Do not start with a 90-post content calendar. Start with a scoreboard you trust.
| Week | Output | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | One-sentence definition + 25–40 prompts from sales notes | The team can repeat the lead of this post |
| 2 | Competitor set frozen; first full panel logged | Three columns exist: mention, citation, SOV |
| 3 | Accuracy pass + gap URLs | Top 5 “who got cited instead” rows |
| 4 | Five pages that should win recommendation answers | Each page mapped to a prompt ID |
Then decide: keep DIY measurement, or book a visibility audit. The visibility lane is the offer home for that work. Strategy lives in the playbook. This post exists so stakeholders stop arguing about vocabulary mid-roadmap.
I have been SEO-certified since 2021. The crawl work did not get less important. The acceptance test changed from “where do we rank?” to “did the answer include us, credit us, and get the facts right?”
Vocabulary cheatsheet for stakeholders
Print this when someone says “AI SEO” in a meeting and means three different things:
| Phrase someone said | Translate to |
|---|---|
| “We’re invisible in AI” | Citation + mention rates on the panel are near zero |
| “ChatGPT knows us” | Brand mention on brand prompts (check accuracy) |
| “We’re winning AEO” | Citation rate and SOV up on revenue-tagged prompts |
| “AI killed our traffic” | Often Overview CTR change — diagnose before buying AEO |
| “We need schema for AEO” | Schema helps entities; it is not a citation vending machine |
| “Our AI visibility is 72%” | Ask: mention, citation, or SOV — and on how many prompts? |
| “The tool says we were a source” | Retrieved, not necessarily cited. Check the visible answer. |
Shared language stops the roadmap from thrashing every sprint.
FAQ
Is AI visibility the same as AEO?
No. AI visibility is the outcome (inclusion in answers). AEO is the work program that improves that outcome. You can discuss visibility without doing AEO. You cannot claim “we did AEO” without measuring visibility on a frozen prompt panel.
What is mention rate vs citation rate?
Mention rate is how often you are named. Citation rate is how often your domain or content is credited as a source. Share of voice is your mentions divided by you plus a frozen competitor set. Track all three. Never average them into one vanity number.
Which AI products should I track first?
Start with the products your buyers actually use — usually ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Expand only when call data or analytics justify the extra logging burden. Three products you can trend beat eight products you screenshot once.
Does AI visibility require Wikipedia?
No. Wikipedia helps some categories with entity corroboration, but most SMB and mid-market brands win with consistent on-site facts, directories, reviews, and third-party roundups. Absence of a Wikipedia page is not a death sentence. Contradictory facts across the pages you already have is.
How often should I re-check AI visibility?
Weekly for an active program; monthly if you are only watching risk. Re-baseline after rebrands, major launches, or a public accuracy incident. Ad hoc Slack screenshots are not a cadence. Same prompts, same products, same competitor set.
When is AI visibility not worth prioritizing yet?
When foundation SEO, entity consistency, or Maps demand is broken — or when nobody on the team will run a prompt panel. Fix those first. Then AI visibility becomes a real investment instead of a slogan. See is AEO worth it for the budget gate.

AI Visibility
AI Visibility Cannabis visibility when the ad accounts are banned
Google and Meta will not take the usual spend. The models still answer dispensary, cultivator, and brand questions — if the site can be read and the cart can clear a 21+ order.
AI Visibility When ChatGPT names the franchise, not your shop
Run the best-HVAC-near-me prompt panel. If the model names a national franchise, fix corroboration and entity facts — not another blog calendar.
AI Visibility How do I get cited by Perplexity specifically
Allow PerplexityBot, put a liftable answer and unique numbers in HTML, then log numbered sources on a frozen prompt panel. There is no bought citation rate.
AI Visibility Does Wikipedia or Wikidata help AI recommend my brand
Wikipedia is not a paid AI lever. Notability plus independent sources decide the page; a real Wikidata item helps entity consistency, not a promotional stub.
