Cracked shop phone with a cyan CALL button, truck keys, and an hours plate on black steel.

The furnace is dead. They will call the first shop that looks real and picks up.

That is the whole brief. I am in Michigan. I have shipped HVAC and forge work. I will not write you a manifesto about innovation in comfort.

The short answer

  • Put the number where a thumb can hit it. Not in a footer. Not behind a chat widget.
  • Put hours, service area, and a short quote path on the first screen. If they have to hunt, they are already dialing the franchise.
  • Keep name, address, phone, and hours identical to Google Business Profile. The map pack and the site are one shop, or they are two lies.
  • After five, the call still has to go somewhere. A missed-call text-back is cheaper than a person sitting the phone on Saturday.

If you want the longer trades checklist — LCP, doorway risk, review rules — read The Trades and SMB Website Playbook. This note is the Tuesday version.

What the site is for

A shop site is not a brand film. It is a proof surface that matches the truck.

The buyer is standing in a cold house or a hot warehouse. They typed a city and a trade. They will give the job to whoever:

  1. Looks like a real shop — license, area, a photo that is not stock.
  2. Can be reached without a form that asks for a life story.
  3. Picks up, or texts back, before the next listing does.

I have a live HVAC site in the book — AllCity HVAC — built around speed-to-quote and zip routing. I have a Traverse City metal shop — Matt Coffey Design — because architects will not spec what they cannot see. Those are the shapes. I will not attach a fake close rate to either one.

What a shop site must do

Four things. If these are wrong, the rest is decoration.

Tap-to-call. The number is a link. It works on a job-site phone. The header does not hide it behind a hamburger for the sake of a clean grid.

Hours. If you are not 24/7, do not write 24/7. A site that promises a night dispatch and dumps to voicemail is paid distrust.

Service area. Counties you actually cover. Not a spun city page for every zip in the state. The quote path can route by zip. The copy should not pretend you are everywhere.

Quote path. A short form that lands with a person who can say yes — or an after-hours rail that texts back a slot. Learn more as the hero CTA is the wrong job.

GBP is not the shop

Google Business Profile is the card on the map. The site is the proof the card cannot hold: the real photo, the license, the service list that matches dispatch, the quote path.

If the card is empty, fix the card first. If the card is clean and the site is a Facebook page, you are still losing to the shop that looks like it will show up.

I wrote the invest-first split here: Google Business Profile vs the website. The rule does not change because you only have three trucks.

After five

Most shops do not lose weekday 10 a.m. jobs. They lose Saturday and the night the unit dies.

You do not need an agent for that on day one. You need:

  • The number on the site.
  • A missed-call text that says we got it, here is the next slot.
  • A person who can still take the live call when they are on the floor.

That is the Voice AI receptionist and the lead-qualify rail, described in shop English — not a node count. If a kid on Saturday is cheaper than a $2,400 workflow, I will say so. The automation audit is $500 and it exists to tell you that.

What I will not build

A purple parallax hero and a blog about innovation in comfort. If that is the brief, I am the wrong builder.

I will also not invent a testimonial from a shop I did not hear from. The receipts on this site are systems built, systems still running, and hours given back. They are not a made-up HVAC conversion rate.

The Tuesday spokes

The phone pillar is the site. These are the next rooms:

Where to start

  • One-truck shop: the $1,500 sprint lets you see the shop site before you buy the build.
  • You already have a site and the phone still dumps: send the shop brief.
  • You want the door in their language: /shops.

Will this work if I only have a Facebook page?

Yes. That is a common starting point. The sprint replaces the page as the place people land when they search the shop name. Facebook can stay as a feed. It should not be the only proof surface.

Do I have to be on a computer?

No. The site is for the customer’s phone and for yours. If you cannot update hours from a truck, the build is wrong.

Can my CSR still take the call?

Yes. The system texts back and books when nobody can pick up. When someone is at the desk, they take the call. I do not replace a good CSR to justify a workflow.
